Hey Backblast! I don't know. If you let me work a back pocket answer: when the square first came out the brand G-Shock had no value yet, it's selling point was the ruggedness or "protection".

I have heard it mentioned that it was only recently Casio has released a couple of G-Shocks that do not say "Casio" anywhere on the face or bezel showing that G-Shock itself is now a valuable brand name.
