That is cool! The short answer is "yes". Solars will actually use the solar panel to decide if there is sufficient light and NOT turn on the EL. Non-solars will light up every time they hit the correct position regardless of light in the area. You can see where this can get battery draining.

Thanks. Like I said I thought it was for the battery, but no harm in getting another opinion.
